Abstract

Abstract: With the acceleration of technological changes and product innovation, ability to share software engineering experience (all kinds of knowledge that can be of use for developing software) within a software-development organization is a major competitive advantage. Support for sharing experiences at the technical-system level together with the human-based enactment of processes are highly important in industry and public organizations. We call such a combination of computer and human agents a learning “system,” in the sense of a socio-technical system. To build such learning systems systematically and in a cost-effective way, it is necessary to have systematic development processes. Given the software engineering domain as our main focus, what is needed then, is an approach that is both general enough to cover the whole domain of software-engineering-experience reuse and specific enough to give meaningful, detailed process descriptions. In this chapter, such an approach is described. We present parts of the experience factory application-development process that especially considers the interplay between human-based and computer-based processes. We describe the subprocesses for goal-oriented ontology development for software-engineering experience, that is, subprocesses that are specialized towards the tasks of populating and utilizing an experience base for the domain of software-engineering-experience reuse. These processes are widely supported by case-based reasoning technology and address non-technical issues, such as social and organizational issues.
